Starting a Fitness Routine for 2025: A Fresh Start for a Healthier You

Starting a Fitness Routine for 2025: A Fresh Start for a Healthier You

As we step into 2025, many of us are looking for ways to prioritise our health and well-being. Starting a fitness routine is one of the best ways to improve both physical and mental health, but it can also feel overwhelming. How do you set achievable goals? What type of exercise is right for you? And how do you stay motivated throughout the year?

To help answer these questions, we’ve turned to an expert in the field: Amy Brook-Partridge, Head Trainer at F45. With years of experience coaching people from all walks of life, Amy shares her top advice for starting and maintaining a successful fitness routine in 2025.

1. What’s your top advice for anyone starting a fitness routine?

"Whenever you start a fitness routine, you need to think about your goals and your 'why'. Whether it's to get fitter, stronger, leaner, or to train for an event, your goal needs to be realistic. If the aim is to lose weight, rather than thinking 'I must lose 2 stone', set smaller targets that are achievable (1-3lbs a week). Or if it's to get stronger, find a good personal trainer or coach who can give you a realistic programme to follow.

It's all well and good setting out in January all guns blazing, but without realistic goals it's more than likely you will get disheartened or, even worse, injured."

2. How can people stay motivated when starting a new routine?

"Find a form of training that you enjoy. Like anything, forcing yourself to do something that doesn't bring you joy will ultimately end in disappointment. It may be that you prefer group training to solo training in a gym – if so, find your tribe or community. Some prefer HIIT training, strength and conditioning, spin, zumba, pilates, boxing, or personal training.

There's so much choice out there, and many gyms and studios offer trial packages. Take advantage of those and try what you can until you find what you enjoy. And keep remembering your 'why'. Write it down, along with your realistic goals, and keep coming back to them."

3. Are there any fitness trends or activities you recommend, particularly for women?

"Fitness trends come and go, and I don't recommend following them for the sake of it. However, as a female almost-50-year-old coach, I will always advise women to strength train, particularly as they get older. Women can lose up to 20% bone density following menopause – strength training not only helps bone strength but also mobility and functionality.

For myself, I am just discovering reformer pilates. I love running, HIIT training, and resistance work, but I have come to realise reformer is a great way to combine much of what I love. It builds on flexibility, mobility, muscle strength, and is low impact. I've found it very humbling, to be honest – I never realised it could be so challenging!"
