Meet Max Panks: Actor Turned Watercolour Landscape Artist

Ealing is a hub of creativity, and few embody this better than Max Panks. A local artist and actor, Max has captured the essence of Ealing in a way that resonates deeply with its residents. His stunning depiction of Walpole Park graces the front cover of Ealing Living Magazine's Winter 2024 issue, showcasing the quiet beauty of the area in its wintry splendour.

Max’s journey into art began in earnest in January 2017, though his passion for drawing and portraiture has been with him since childhood. After stepping away to train as an actor in 2010, Max found his way back to visual art, blending it seamlessly with his acting career. His watercolour landscapes are not only a celebration of the places he’s visited but also a testament to his unique artistic voice, one that combines storytelling with a minimalist touch.

In celebration of Max’s work, we are hosting a special Christmas event at Boutique Workplace, Saunders House, Ealing Broadway, tomorrow from 6 PM to 9 PM. If you'd like to join us, please RSVP to louisa@ealinglivingmagazine.co.uk.

A Conversation with Max Panks

  1. Your work beautifully captures landscapes in watercolour. How would you describe your artistic style, and how has your background as an actor influenced your approach to visual art?
"I’ve been cultivating the painting habit for the last 10 years, but it wasn’t till later that I discovered watercolour—quite by accident! Watercolour became my medium of choice because of its simplicity. Serving much like a journal, it’s the perfect complement to my career as an actor, as I take my paints everywhere I go. I have been able to build a large body of work while working in touring theatre and on cruise ships to destinations like Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. I call my style impressionistic, and my aim is to tell as much of a story as I can while using as few brush strokes as possible."
  2. Ealing is such a vibrant and diverse area. What is it about Ealing that inspires your art, and how does it feature in your work?
"I’ve lived in Ealing for the best part of 15 years, and it will forever hold a place in my heart. Ealing has inspired much of the work I’ve produced over the last decade. Its seasonal beauty insists that I step out to paint her all through the year."
  3. The front cover of the Ealing Living Winter issue is stunning. Could you share the story or creative process behind this piece? What emotions or themes were you hoping to convey to the magazine's readers?
"Painted specifically for Ealing Living Magazine’s Winter 2024 edition, this work was the product of various sketches of many different parts of Ealing. I very much wanted a snowy scene, so as a reference, I landed on an older photo taken in Walpole Park during the last heavy snowfall. I think the painting captures the magic stillness held in the air when fresh snow settles—the stark whiteness of the snow and the slower pace it brings. It’s an inspired moment of reflection, as if time itself has slowed down."

Max Panks’ artistry reflects not only his travels but also his deep connection to the community and landscapes of Ealing. We’re thrilled to showcase his work and celebrate his unique talent at our upcoming event. Join us for an evening of creativity, conversation, and inspiration!
